According to Slovakian officials, BMW is looking to open a new plant in Europe, somewhere around the Central and Eastern European area. As they claim, Slovakia is one of the top candidates.
"Slovakia is one of the countries under consideration for BMW's new investment," economy ministry spokesman Stanislav Jurikovic told AFP Monday, without disclosing further details.
Slovakia is currently the world's top per-capita car-producer, the automotive sector accounting for 39% of overall economic output. 74,000 people work in the industry, in Volkswagen, Kia and Peugeot-Citroen factories around the country.
Unlike other German manufacturers (Mercedes-Benz and Audi), BMW doesn't have any factories in low-cost European countries. The Bavarian manufacturer said last week that it plans to invest in a new plant somewhere in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia or Romania.
However, when asked about a decision, BMW officials revealed to AFP they didn't reach a decision yet but "it regularly explores different countries all over the globe as potential locations for future production sites."
