BMW has been working on apps for smart devices for quite some time now, a while back launching one for Samsung's Galaxy Gear watch. Now, as Apple unveiled their own smart watch, an app for iOS is also available.
After selling out their online stocks in a matter of hours, it's pretty clear to see that the Apple Watch will be yet another successful product from Cupertino.
Keeping up with the trends, BMW launched the BMW i Remote app for its i cars today, marking yet another chapter in its history. The new app is already available for free on the iTunes store for owners of the new-age cars.
Using it allows the driver to perform various tasks and check parameters of the car while on the run. Also, it connects to the car's onboard computer and allows you to do things remotely.
The start screen presents the car linked up to the smartwatch in the already traditional style of BMW i. Also displayed here are the car’s charge status and available range, as well as the time of day. Scrolling further up the start screen reveals a new menu through which users can check a host of other vehicle information.
Therefore you can check if the doors are locked, the sunroof is still open or the boot is closed. Service alerts are also flashed up – e.g. if a brake fluid change or service is due.
Status indicators aren't the only advantage the app brings. You can actually control some of the car's functions using it.
For example, you can pre-condition your car while charging it. Let's say you parked it in the sun and you don't want to sweat through your pants when leaving your office. You can cool the car down using its AC system before you get to it, from your wrist.
To top everything off, you can send navigation coordinates from the car's system to the watch, to help you continue your trip on foot after parking. That's useful in our book!
