Up until now, if you wanted to change the tune of your BMW on the road you had to use the driving experience controls on the left of your gearshift lever. Entering Sport mode usually opens a valve in the exhaust and lets some meaner burbles come to life.
That’s about to change now as the Germans are launching a new exhaust for their F26 X4 model. The xDrive35i version of the Sport Activity Coupe can be fitted with an M Performance Exhaust that is remotely controlled.

It’s all done via Bluetooth 4.0 according to the manufacturer that also claims that “in Sport mode, the BMW X4 sounds significantly more emotional than with the series trim, but without foregoing everyday suitability.”

The trick is that on top of Sport mode you also get Track mode in which the system achieves its maximum potency, but that is not road legal at the moment. That’s probably why they call it that in the first place.

So how do you tell them apart? Well, first of all, you have the sound to tell you whether you’re driving in the ECO Pro mode or Track mode but then again, some LEDs on the remote control will also be a good indicator.

Everything is done from stainless steel, by the usual standards of BMW. Apart from the sound you get, the new M Performance exhaust also sets itself apart from the regular version with its twin setup at the back, with trapezoidal pipes reminding us of the V8 models from Munich.

What is probably truly impressive about this system is how it must sound in Track mode since you can only go as high as Sport mode in terms of acoustics without breaking the law. Another thing we’re looking for is some pricing, but BMW is sketchy with the details at the moment.
