Back in 2012 BMW launched a field trial using their ActiveE 1 Series models in order to obtain useful and relevant data about how people use electric vehicles and where improvements could be done. This week, after almost a year, BMW launched an on-line digital tool that allows people all over the world witness the positive environmental impact the ActiveE drivers had.
The drivers involved in the experiment, called "electronauts" enter vital, unfiltered data into the system each week, in order to keep the platform updated. The gathered information is then presented in 3 categories: Range, Savings and Environment.

The standings, at the moment, are impressive. According to BMW data, the 700 Electronauts managed to drive 6.1 million miles (9.76 million km), spent $740,000 (€566,207) less in fuel expenses and saved 275,000 gallons (1 million liters) of gas so far, collectively.

“The Electronaut Effect is an exciting tool because it offers consumers unvarnished, hard data on the driving performance of our fleet of ActiveE vehicles, providing a very accurate picture of the BMW electric vehicle experience and the benefits of all-electric driving. This is an important, new resource to help drivers considering an electric vehicle purchase make informed decisions," said Jacob Harb, head of Electric Vehicle Operations and Strategy, BMW of North America.

The "Electronaut Effect" is destined to help buyers understand better the advantages of using all-electric vehicles. At the same time, the test drivers have a portal at their disposal that offers detailed data about their ActiveE vehicle and driving habits. Using the new portal, the drivers can see the average number of times they charged their ActiveE per day, average remaining charge at the end of the day, and their personal reduction in driving-related carbon footprint.
