We’ve already talked about how BMW plans to use laser technology for headlights, but it seems that the development is closer than we thought, with the carmaker also releasing a series of images of the goodie.
The carmaker's engineers used a setup that guides the blue lasers through a “a fluorescent phosphor material”, with the result being a beam of white light that is perfect for road use.
Various media sources indicate that BMW will bring the new laser technology to the streets in the next two or three years, with Hanafi Abdul, a BMW optical systems designer, telling Inside Line that the system which relies on photonic process to create white light is currently in the production-ready form and is awaiting approval.
We’ll remind you that BMW claims the laser system is 1,000 times brighter and 100 times smaller than the LED one, while offering twice the efficiency and coming with a life span of 10,000 hours.
