Following the i3 hatchback and iX3 crossover, BMW has finally revealed a dedicated EV in the guise of the iX. Even though the naming convention isn’t coherent and the ginormous kidney grille makes no sense on an electric vehicle, there’s a lot to like about the all-new model that promises “over 600 kilometers in the WLTP cycle.”
In addition to the driving range, BMW promises more than 500 horsepower from a dual-motor setup that enables e-AWD with active torque vectoring for great handling. The iX can also charge tremendously fast, namely 40 minutes from 10 to 80 percent at 200 kW. Oh, and by the way, this fellow is pretty spacious as well.

It’s a rough match for the X5 in length and width, it stands almost as high as the X6, and the wheels are very similar in diameter to what you may find on the X7. Be that as it may, the iX boasts 5 seats and a 7-seat option hasn’t been announced.

Something that BMW didn’t confirm either is a second body style, and the pickup truck before your eyes won’t happen in a million years. Coming courtesy of pixel artist Kleber Silva, the iX with the workhorse makeover features a smaller cabin that translates to less rear legroom. The cargo area isn’t exactly spacious either, and because of the unibody construction, the payload is pretty limited too.

As far as towing capacity is concerned, BMW didn’t confirm this figure for the iX nor did the Bavarian automaker mention if a tow bar and a hitch receiver will be offered as optional extras. In the case of the Tesla Model Y, the Palo Alto-based automaker quotes up to 3,500 pounds or 1,600 kilograms for all-wheel-drive configurations.

In other words, the higher-ups in Munich can't make a business case for an e-pickup. A body style that may actually happen is a coupe-styled SUV like the X6 in comparison to the X5. BMW said that electrification will account for half of its global sales by 2030, and there’s no denying a coupe-SUV with e-propulsion is going to be offered by then.
