Everybody was surprised when BMW finally unveiled the production version of the i8. That’s because the Germans were true to their word and created a car that was almost unchanged from the concept. Considering how good looking that was, the i8 turned out to be something completely different compared to anything on the road today.
We’d even go as far as to say that it stands next to the McLaren P1, Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spider or tops them in this regard. That’s because the hypercars were created using a design language that was still well within their respective manufacturer’s limits.

Look at the LaFerrari and you’ll immediately say it’s an Italian. The same goes for the Porsche that’s an evolution of the styling we’ve been getting used to from the Germans in the last couple of decades. However, in BMW’s case the i8 features lines and styling cues that are not seen in any other model from the line-up. The only exception might be the front fascia where the faux kidney grilles are present, as always.

Tuners want to capitalize on the image of the i8

Of course, the world wasn’t oblivious to these changes and BMW made them on purpose. They wanted their i range to be different and immediately pop out wherever they went. Tuners also noticed a great potential here.

If a car looks this good stock, why not try to make it even better? Sure, there will always be a debate here between conservators and tuning enthusiasts but we’re not here to take sides. The i8 looks great as it is but it can be enhanced in key areas to look even better without going overboard.

German Special Customs knows this and created a special kit for the i8 called ‘iTron’. Admittedly, the car does look like it came straight out of the famous movie.

What's so special?

Noticeable are the new front an rear bumpers, the new tailpipes and the added door sills as well as the new bonnet and the bigger wheels. Sure, it all looks great but can it turn to reality?

The truth of the matter is that it’s all just a project for now, testing the waters. The problem with actually seeing such cars on the road is that the i8 is made of CFRP and has a special construction in order to be as light as possible.

These parts would be added to the overall weight and they could be done in carbon fiber to do so but they’d also imply creating a means to install them and that’s where the big challenge lays. If tuners manage to overcome it, we’re in for some nice rides in the future. Until then check out the photos in the gallery below.
