After the i8 became the Formula E safety car, the Germans confirmed that they have been picked as the Official Vehicle Partner for the next-gen competition that is getting more and more attention these days.
Today, the inaugural season of the new FIA Formula E Championship got underway in Beijing with BMW by its side with three cars, a BMW i8 safety car, an i3 medical car and another one for extraction purposes.
“From 2014, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) is breaking new ground with the FIA Formula E Championship. Fully-electric single-seater racing cars, narrow street circuits in the heart of major cities around the world, and an innovative incorporation of fans via social networks: the concept of the series is interesting in many ways,” said said Jörg Reimann, Vice President BMW Brand Experience Customer.
“The fully-electric BMW i3 and our low-emission hybrid, the BMW i8, are still synonymous with the driving pleasure BMW is renowned for. In brief: BMW i and Formula E are a perfect match,” he added.
Looking over the performance the BMW i8 offers, the CO2 emissions it shows combined with the fuel consumption, it’s hard not to make a case for it. The combined power of the ICE and electric motor reaches 362 HP and 570 Nm (420 lb-ft) of torque sending the all-wheel-drive car up to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.4 seconds while releasing 49 grams of CO2 into the atmosphere for each km. Furthermore, the fuel consumption is rated at 2.1 l/100 km (121 mpg) in the European cycle.
“We are delighted to be announcing this partnership with BMW – one of the leading innovative automobile manufacturers. The BMW i8 and i3 models are fantastic, both in terms of performance and ground-breaking design, and, with the wireless electrical vehicle charging technology from Qualcomm, it means they can be rapidly deployed, without unplugging, ensuring they get out on track attending to incidents without delay,” Jaume Sallares, Marketing Director for Formula E.
She is actually speaking of the prototypes used on these cars that showcase the inductive charging technology designed by Qualcomm. With it, i cars can be charged wirelessly just by parking them on top of a special surface.
The FIA Formula E Championship was initiated by none other than FIA President Jean Todt, who has been a strong supporter of the series. All the teams will compete in identical cars, generating 200 kW/272 hp, for the 2014/15 season. In the race they generate 150kW/200 hp, with the remaining power available via a “FanBoost” system, which can only be used a certain number of times during the race. Each team in Formula E competes with two drivers and four cars.
BMW DTM driver António Félix da Costa and BMW driver Michela Cerruti will be driving in this championship. The driver line-up also features the likes of Nick Heidfeld, Jarno Trulli, Bruno Senna, Sebastien Buemi, all of whom are known for their time in Formula One.
