BMW apparently discovered the secret to making the world’s most efficient car. Quite the turn of events, right? From being a car company that focuses most on creating the ultimate driving machine, the Bavarians are now investing more than ever in making their cars more eco-friendly.
Well, times change and so do we. The German media is reporting that the blue and white roundel company is currently developing a car that will have an average fuel consumption as low as 0.4 l/100km. That translates into a whopping 588 mpg US!
Of course, it sounds too good to be true right now, especially since they are also claiming that this will be a four-seater and will have a weight of around 1.2 tons. That’s a huge amount of weight to carry around for a car that is claimed to be this efficient.
The body and chassis would be made of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer and in order to get around, it would use an electric motor coupled to a 2-cylinder scooter engine that will work as a generator. It’s the same principle as in the range-extended i3.
That being said, the report floating around the German media at the moment claims that it will also be quite practical as well, with a boot of 348 liters and four actually usable seats. The only car that comes close in terms of fuel consumption figures these days is the Volkswagen XL1 and that one only has two seats, not to mention a limited-production run.
The CO2 emissions would be sitting around the 10 grams per kilometer mark which would be remarkable. Other interesting characteristics will also help out, like the 0.18 drag coefficient this model is rumored to have.
The car was seemingly already presented at a meeting that focused on e-mobility. However, there is no official confirmation of its existence and, at the moment, it seems like such a confirmation will have to wait for a while. If it does turn out to be true though, it could revolutionize the way we look at BMW as a brand. Most likely it will be sold under the i sub-brand colors.
