The 2016 BMW 7 Series will come out with a couple of carefully picked innovations that should make it a leader in the segment. That being said, the Germans felt like some of the tech could be offered for older cars as well.
Introducing the retrofit wireless charging kit for BMWs. The Munich-based manufacturer released info on such a device just yesterday and it looks like things are looking up.

If your phone is capable of wireless charging, you can get this new BMW Accessory and charge your device without using a cord anymore. It is basically a new snap-in adapter like the one we’ve been getting used to for quite some time.

It’s still installed in the center armrest but can now charge your phone as well as offering some pretty good integration with the car’s infotainment system. An LED provides info about the charging state. The best news is that the snap-in wireless charging adapter can be used in all BMW vehicles fitted with a base plate.

Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t offer inductive charging for its iPhones at the moment but BMW found a workaround for it still. Knowing that most owners probably use an Apple device, they came up with a wireless charging solution for them too.

In this case, we’re talking about a special case that was designed by BMW and is a one-piece unit with a fold-up lid, used in a similar way to a conventional mobile phone protective case. When using it, the phone becomes compatible not only with the system inside the Bavarian machines but all Qi-certified chargers as well.

While it all sounds great, it’s still a disappointment that this is only available for the center armrest, a choice that, as most BMW owners know, does bring about some headaches. The most important is that you tend to forget your phone in the car. Fitting this wireless charging option somewhere in the ashtray area might’ve been a better choice.

However, according to the Germans, this option was preferred to reduce the amount of radiations coming inside the cabin from the device itself. The sales debut is expected to be announced at a later date.
