BMW already handed over a couple of i8s for reviewing purposes, most of them around the greater Los Angeles area. Amongst the selected few that already got to drive it, you can now include Chris Harris.
His take on the car was, by far the most balanced, seeing it exactly as it is: an alternative. From what? You might ask. From everything.

It has a new design, a new powertrain and gives you new sensations, without making you feel guilty about ruining the atmosphere for future generations (if that was the case, anyway).

Furthermore, from the production process to the end product, the i8 follows a more than eco-friendly attitude. It has under 50 grams of CO2 per kilometer emissions and yet, it’s no slouch like a Prius, for example.

Actually, it’s surprisingly fast. Fitted with a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged engine featuring BMW’s TwinPower technology and an electric motor derived from the one used on the i3, the i8 has plenty of power and torque on its side.

The conventional unit makes 231 HP and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque and is hooked up to an automatic 6-speed gearbox. The other means of propulsion makes 131 HP and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque, being connected to a two-speed box.

Combine, the two give the i8 instant 550 Nm (420 lb-ft) of torque and 362 HP, plenty for a car weighing 1,485 kg (3,300 lbs) to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds.

That’s why we get excited every time we see one. Because this might not be hypercar per say but it is an huge step forward considering what it brings to the table.

This one, is wearing the Sophisto Grey color we’ve been looking for quite a while. Apart from this one, you can also have the hybrid sports car in Protonic Blue, Ionic Silver and Crystal White.

If you’re interested, you can get the i8 in the US starting at $135,700 MSRP. Well... at least you can order one, as BMW claims that all cars scheduled for 2014 production have already been sold out.
