Not too long ago, the guys from Car Throttle were just two passionate guys from the UK posting all sorts of funny car videos on Youtube, discussing cars and stereotype. Times have changed though, and their huge audience online turned them into a voice worth hearing.

Big automakers are starting to call them out and give them more and more attention, one of them being BMW. The things the internet can do for you….

The Germans gave them the brand new BMW i8 to take for a spin and tell their viewers what they thought about it. And when you’re a beginner, dealing with the future, what could you possibly say other than ‘it’s incredible!’?

Of course, the i8 does have plenty of arguments in its corner to convince you that it’s worth the $136,000 price tag. After all, it is the future and all cars in the future will be using the same kind of hybrid powertrain to go around but it does have some flaws as well, that shouldn’t be overlooked.

The 362 HP and 570 Nm (420 lb-ft) of torque it has comes from an internal combustion 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine and an electric motor and they are powerful enough to send the car up to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds thanks to its all-wheel-drive platform.

It sounds good too, at least inside, where BMW’s Active Sound Design pumps engine sound through the speakers, a feature that won’t upset too many customers. However, it won’t be capable to fool those hardcore, old-school drivers out there.

That all-wheel-drive platform we mentioned before, combined with the efforts BMW made to keep the weight in check ruin the car’s sporty feel. In the bends, there’s noticeable understeer and the tires could be wider to make sure there’s more traction when needed but this car is about compromises.

In this regard, it’s absolutely perfect as it allows most people to have fun around town, on short squirts of adrenaline while also caring about the environment. That’s where it really shines with 49 grams of CO2 per kilometer and an average fuel consumption of 121 mpg (2.1 l/100 km).
