BMW i8 First Drive Review by Autocar

Just like with it's slower and more economy-focused brother, the i3, the i8 is now undergoing various tests before its official release. One prototype is now tested by various journalists amongst whom you'll also spot Autocar.
They were quick to write a review about their experience and we're glad they did. The plug-in hybrid is exactly what BMW wanted us to expect, even as a prototype (since the production car isn't ready yet).

Getting inside the car will make you feel like you're in the future and the tall seats and animated dashboard will welcome you instantly. Fitted with a B38 3-cylinder 1.5-liter internal combustion engine and an electric one, the i8 has all-wheel-drive and some impressive numbers to boast with.

It reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 4.5 seconds and has a limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). However, it does so whilst returning over 94 mpg (2.5 l/100 km) and that is mighty impressive.

The extensive work on the chassis is felt from the first turn you take and the car is well balanced and stable in any kind of corner. You actually feel like you're on rails. That's possible mostly thanks to the low centre of gravity and the 50:50 weight distribution.

Fun times will be easily achieved inside this car, as the DSC system (dynamic stability control) was improved and you can enjoy all of the 570 Nm (420 lb-ft) of torque whenever you like, to make the rear end skid.

Bottom line, the competition, Porsche's 911 Carrera 4S sure looks worried right now and once the car will be launched, comparison tests should come up by the thousands.
