BMW i8 Demand Already Exceeding Production

BMW released the full, updated specs of the i8 this week, announcing that the first deliveries of the world’s first laser headlight production car will begin in June in Europe and July in the US.

Monday, in an official statement, BMW might’ve slipped a bit too much info to the press saying that “demand for the BMW i8 is already exceeding the planned production volume during ramp-up.” Apparently, the i8 is following in the footsteps of the i3, already being ordered by thousands of people, exceeding the most optimistic forecast done in Munich.

If history will repeat itself, it could mean that a 3 or 4 month long waiting list could very well show up, disappointing the eager customers from the get go.

The revealed specs might bring further momentum at worldwide dealerships as they show even better numbers than previously speculated. For example, the fuel consumption was reevaluated at 2.1 l/100 km (112 mpg) compared to the original 2.5 l/100 km (94 mpg) reported.

Furthermore, we also found out that the i8 will be available with a standard fuel tank of 30 liters, allowing you to cover up to 440 km (273 miles) but also an optional 42-liter one that should be good for up to 600 km (373 miles), therefore taking range anxiety completely out of the question.

The first ever BMW hybrid sportscar will do 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph), electronically limited. It can also run on electricity alone for 23 miles and reach a top speed while in EV mode of 120 km/h (75 mph).
