It's been seven years since the BMW i3 launched and about a decade since the company started messing around with electric cars. We think they finally have something they can be proud of, something cutting-edge, the i4.
In case you've been living under a rock for the past couple of years, we'll mention that the Tesla Model 3 now outsells the BMW 3 Series. It's not only the most popular EV, but also the top premium car in several markets.

Thus, the i4 can only be interpreted as BMW's answer to the Model 3, and it seems to be a pretty good one. Our spies have captured this full production prototype wearing reduced camouflage while filling up on juice.

BMW reportedly wanted to discontinue the 4 Series Gran Coupe, and the i4 seems to have taken its place as an unofficial member of the 4er family. This EV features a curved roof and the same giant grille design we saw on the M4.

There are a few differences from the i4 concept that was supposed to be shown in Geneva last month. For example, the headlights are larger, the creases are less pronounced and there's no oversized diffuser at the back. Hopefully, the copper paint survived on the options list.

It's pretty clear that BMW is trying to make the most exciting electric car it can. The i4 concept featured a large electric motor at the back producing 523 horsepower. However, we see drive shafts on all the wheels of this test vehicle.

Rumors over the past couple of years always stated the i4 would have both single and dual motors. Also, considering the limited 286 horsepower output of the iX3 that's about to be revealed, it's far more likely the M4-worrying levels of i4 output will be split between all wheels.

The battery is expected to be an 80 kWh unit located under the floor. It promises a WLTP range of 373 miles, but the American rating should be lower.
