At this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, BMW was presented with the Green Car of the Year Award from the Green Car Journal for the i3, adding to an already impressive tally of awards the electric car already gathered to its name in just one year.
Being introduced last year, the i3 has been on sale for exactly one year this month. In all this time, BMW managed to sell over 12,000 units, adding up to around 1,000 a month which is definitely not bad, considering that it was only being sold in Europe for most of this time. Since the US is expected to become its biggest market and sales started here only a few months ago, things are looking up.

And they’d better be as well, considering how much money was invested in the i sub brand. Over €2 billion were injected in the manufacturing plants for the i3 and i8 as well as the new technology that they use and others are interested in.

For now, BMW’s i3 is just the third best selling electric vehicle on the market but chances are those ratings might change in the near future, as the US market demand starts to kick in. Furthermore, once the EV reaches China as well, it will surely start ramping up the numbers, as the local emission restrictions might persuade people to go for an electric car.

In the meantime, BMW and its EV are collecting trophies. The one handed over by the Green Car Journal last week was based on the BMW i3’s zero emissions at the point of use, its innovative lightweight design and the high percentage of sustainably produced materials used in its manufacture.

Other prizes include two readers’ awards from Auto Zeitung magazine, the Auto Trophy 2013, Green Mobility Trophy 2014, UK Car of the Year Award, Next Green Car Award, the Green Car of the Year Award, the Fleet Hero Award, BMW i3 World Green Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year.
