We're just a few months away from a revolution in all-electric mobility, as BMW is getting ready to roll out its first full plugged in car. Using what it learned from the 1 Series and MINI electric car projects, they've put together the i3, a small hatchback unlike anything else on the market.
Widely expected to debut in production for at the 2013 IAA in Frankfurt, the new i3 is built around completely new architecture making use of lightweight materials. Because the electric power is going to the back wheels, it could very well be as fun to drive as any BMW.
Another i3 prototype has been spotted on the streets of Germany, most likely in Leipzig. As the debut date draws close, sightings have become frequent in nature. Still, the car is heavily camouflaged, though we don't expect much to change over the concepts shown the past two years.
Ideally suited for the city commute, the i3 looks surprisingly big and practical. To ensure nothing stops people from buying this car, BMW will offer its pioneering customers a rental car for when they want to go on longer journeys.
