BMW i3's Batteries Come from Samsung, Can Be Recharged in 30 Minutes

There's no doubt in anyone's mind that for an Electric Vehicle to be considered successful, the batteries will play an important role. BMW took that into consideration, alongside their own findings to bring the best technology to the i3.

The batteries inside the all-electric vehicle add up to a total of 22 kWh and are manufactured by Samsung, the world's leader in the segment. The warranty for the battery is valid for 8 years or 100,000 km (62,000 miles) and that is more than the warranty any BMW is receiving at the moment.

The total weight of the battery adds up to 230 kg (507 lbs), consists of 96 individual cells mounted across the entire length and width of the car's floor and is said to be working at 360 volts. According to BMW, it was designed in such a way that it allows engineers to replace any damaged cell and it is kept at an optimal 20 degrees Celsius temperature thanks to a dedicated AC unit.

Recharging the battery is possible using a variety of means. BMW offers a wall box charger that will completely recharge the battery in six hours. However, when plugged into a 40kW fast charge station, the battery can be charged from 20% to 80% in 30 minutes.

According to BMW's findings after conducting an extended experiment using MINI E and ActiveE 1 Series models on a global scale, most of the charging will be carried at home.
