BMW i3 Ranked Highest in MPG Figures by Consumer Reports

Well, well, well... It seems like BMW’s efforts are finally paying off, with a recent ranking made by Consumer Reports saying that the i3 REx is the most efficient car in its segment.

According to their recent research, the premium EV fitted with a range extender (REx) returned an average of 135 mpg (1.7 l/100 km) overshadowing the runner-up cars by quite a few lengths. In second place, we found the Ford Focus Electric with 108 mpg (2.1 l/100 km) followed by the Mitsubishi i SE with 104 mpg (2.26 l/100 km).

The numbers presented here are even more impressive as they were achieved in stop and go traffic or inside cities, as others might put it. On the highway, the i3 retains its title with 141 mpg (1.66 l/100 km) followed by the Nissan Leaf SL with 118 mpg (1.9 l/100 km) and the Chevrolet Volt with the same figure.

These mixed results (as on the highway we have different runner ups) show that the i3 is top of its class both inside and outside the city. Therefore, no matter how your daily commute looks like or what kind of roads it’s made of, the BMW will be the most fuel-efficient choice.

On top of that, the environment impact will be lower than on any other car in this list. That’s because the Germans use renewable energy to make the EV.

For example, the plant in Moses Lake that manufactures CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer, the material that is used to make the body of the car) uses hydropower while the assembly lines in Leipzig rely on wind power to get things done. Chip in the eucalyptus wood used for the interior trims or the door panels made of recycled PET bottles and you get the picture.

Of course, it’s a lot more expensive than a Leaf but looking at the entire package, it might just make sense.
