China’s traffic and smog problems are getting worse by the day. That’s probably why the city decided to offer BMW i3 owners free license plates starting with this month. In case you didn’t know that means an exempt from taxes worth around $12,000 when registering a vehicle.
It might seem like a lot but that’s how much you’d have to pay to actually own and drive a car (legally) in Shanghai these days. The taxes went so far up because of the pollution issues, the city trying to limit the number of new cars registered every year.
The first free license plate was issued on January 6 according to BMW and it seems like other electric car manufacturers will also benefit from such measures. Amongst them is Tesla and its Model S model.
The i3 is a rather new addition to the Chinese market, the car being imported over there since September last year so it has only been on sale a little over 4 months.
As far as the charging infrastructure for these cars goes, the city has 40 charging points in use at the moment, with plans to create even more to promote cleaner cars. At the moment, China is the biggest CO2 emitter in the world and the government is trying to cut back on its impact on the environment.
