BMW i3 First Drive Review by WhatCar

Even though the i3 wasn't officially launched yet and production of the city-car didn't start yet, the German company offered a few publications the chance to test the new car, under their strict observation.

One of those publications was What Car. They headed out to BMW to see just how good the i3 is, even before it is launched. They weren't disappointed.

Let's get one thing clear from the beginning: this is an EV. It's not meant to be a drag strip champion or a DTM one. Its only purpose is to be used on daily commutes with as little hustle as possible, reducing emissions to zero.

So, keeping that in mind, the i3 is a good car, especially when compared to its rivals like the Nissan Leaf or Renault Zoe. Being developed from scratch as an EV, the Bimmer is more agile than you might think, even at high speeds.

Even though it looks unusually high for a BMW, thanks to the low center of gravity (achieved by inserting the batteries into the floor of the car), even at speeds over 50 mph (80 km/h), the car is agile and steady on its feet. Furthermore, even the braking is efficient, without any kind of wobble.

According to What Car, during their test, the car was even quieter than the rivals they tested, and moved with less whine from the electric propulsion system. The interior is strikingly similar to the concept version and everything screams high-tech. Not many details can be given at the moment but expect good things in this area too.
