Today marks the start of a new, electrified era for BMW. The all-electric, city-car from the Bavarian manufacturer, the i3 entered production at the Leipzig factory, in the presence of the Minister President of the state of Saxony, Stanislaw Tillich, Mayor of Leipzig, Burkhard Jung, and BMW AG Board Member for Production, Harald Krüger.
The car that was especially developed from the ground up as an EV, brings to the world a wide array of advantages and an approach that is destined to reduce the emissions of the car and the production process by as much as possible.

In this regard, creating the CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic) needed for the car is done using 100% regenerable energy in Leipzig and at Moses Lake, in the USA. BMW thus created over 1,500 jobs in the process of bringing affordable CFRP to the market and invested over EUR600 million in this new technology.

“Today represents a milestone in our company’s development. We are making history with the BMW i3. Not only is our first electric car about to hit the road, we are also completely redefining sustainability with regard to personal mobility thanks to groundbreaking technologies and processes,” said BMW production chief Krüger.

“We require 50% less energy and 70% less water, and source the electric energy for production of the BMW i models CO2-free from the wind turbines at the plant,” added Krüger.

The first i3 to exit the assembly lines will be the lead car for the International Berlin Marathon on September 29 and was handed over to German marathon runner Jan Fitschen. Deliveries for the EU will begin in November, whilst the USA and China will get the i3 starting with 2014.
