Whenever a new BMW model comes out, everyone wonders if an M variant will ever show up. The only exception was the i3 that was declared, from the start, to be only built as a city car.
However, even in that case we saw some people speculate the EV might get a bigger engine and the M treatment. Complete rubbish, if you ask us. The i3 is and will forever be just a city car!

Now, speculations surrounding the i8 are starting to show up again. We saw them a while back but in this case, they are definitely more justified. The i8 is a hybrid sports car and could very well develop into a proper supercar.

Just imagine the 4.4-liter bi-turbo V8 S63Tu engine on this 1,490 kg, low slung machine and you get the idea. However, the whole concept behind this car was to create a more fuel efficient car that would allow you to feel less guilty about melting the arctic cap.

Now, the guys from Carbuzz are reporting that they talked to BMW officials and they confirmed that the i and M brands will not be mixed together.

"I don’t think that it would make sense to mix these two sub-brands in one car. We have the Ms, we have the i, and we have the BMW, the core brand," stated BMW Group head of technology communications Cypselus von Frankenberg.

So, for all those that expected a new supercar from BMW in the shape of an i8 on steroids for the 100th anniversary of the brand, this is bad news.
