BMW G31 5 Series Touring Spied, Looks Spacious

The seventh-generation BMW 5 Series is just around the corner, which is why our spy photographers are spotting the thing more often than before. This time around, the G31 5 Series Touring is the one we’ll focus our attention on.

Despite the heavy camouflage, it’s plain as day that the next-gen Touring has serious load-lugging capability. Most probably, the G31 will offer in excess of 560 liters (19.77 cuFT) of cargo capacity with the rear seats up, increasing to more than 1,670 liters (58.97 cuFT) when folded flat into the floor.

The additional space over the G30 sedan doesn’t affect the elegant aesthetics one expects from a 5 Series. Squint your eyes a little bit and you may also see several Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe design cues.

Inside, the BMW G31 5 Series Touring will borrow much of the dashboard layout of the newest BMW 7 Series, including the Gesture Control interface for easy and intuitive interaction with the iDrive infotainment system. The platform will also bear a resemblance to the modular job of the 7 Series. The use of carbon fiber reinforced plastics in the chassis will drop something in the vicinity of 100 kilograms (220 pounds) over the outgoing 5 Series Touring.

A suite of four-, six-, and eight-cylinder engines enhanced with turbo get-up-and-go will animate the G30 sedan and G31 longroof, ranging from the 2.0-liter B47 diesel and B48 gasoline to the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 tower-of-power. A plug-in hybrid powertrain is also bound to happen, combining the bowels of the X5 xDrive40e: a 2.0-liter four-banger and an electric motor.

Word on the street is the 2016 Paris Motor Show in October will be the place of unveiling for the G30 sedan and G31 longroof, meaning that the U.S. and Canada will receive the seventh-generation BMW 5 Series for the 2017 model year. The F90 M5 will follow its siblings in early 2017 (probably at the Geneva Motor Show) and go on sale for the 2018 model year.
