Over in BMW’s headquarters, enough is not enough. Just when the market seemed saturated with new niches, the Germans are coming up with new models every day. This week, our spy photographers caught up with the Family Active Sports Tourer model or FAST for short.
We’ve met this car before and it seems like things didn’t progress all that much in the meantime but it’s interesting to see how development moves on. The headlights and taillights are still in pre-production form, the only things we can be sure to make it in the end product being the mirrors and the roof (seen sporting an impressive sunroof here).

According to early info, the Family Active Sports Tourer will be a blend of X1 and 2 Series Active Tourer. It will create a new niche, right under the upcoming X1, filling in the blank left open between the smallest model in the X Series and the 2 SAT.

Furthermore, it will be built on the same UKL platform MINI and the Active Tourer are using, making this yet another front-wheel-drive BMW for the masses. Chances are we’ll also get an xDrive version but no such info was confirmed just yet.

According to BMW, this car will be a sports van, a dynamic people mover with an XXL cargo deck. At the moment, details are really scarce but we’re finding it really hard to differentiate the upcoming X1 from this FAST prototype.

They will probably also share the engines and the transmissions, varying from 1.5-liter 3-cylinder plants to 2-liter I4 units, the 3-liter I6 versions being a pretty unsafe bet right now, at least for this model. With BMW estimating that they will be selling one million FWD cars by 2020, expect such new, controversial models to pop-up more often in the following months.
