The new uber-SUV on the block is definitely the BMW X5 M. At the moment, it’s one of the fastest cars of its kind in the world, only the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S being only a fraction quicker to 100 km/h (62 mph).
Looking at the BMW stable alone, the X5 M and its new 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo engine are the torquiest mix-up the Bavarians ever put together with 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) at their disposal. We know these numbers seem insane but they are real and knowing the Germans, we’re willing to bet there’s actually more power being developed at the crank than what they are willing to admit.

The F85 X5 M was just sent over to the guys from GTBoard and, in their usual fashion, they had to put it to the test against the cars they could muster up in a hurry. Therefore, we’re here to show you a drag race between this monstrous SUV and a small Coupe that was built in limited numbers. We’re referring to the 1M Coupe.

The car adored by enthusiasts was only built in 6,331 units and offered with a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder bi-turbo N54 engine good for 340 HP and up to 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque thanks to overboost. The rear-wheel drive layout and manual gearbox (only that gearbox was offered for it) made it accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.9 seconds.

That’s 0.7 seconds behind what the 2.2-ton monster X5 M can do thanks to its 575 HP and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque, all-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Looking at the figures, you’d think that the poor Coupe doesn’t stand a chance, with nearly half the power at its disposal but we were rather surprised to see how the two stacked up.

As a matter of fact, thanks to its lighter construction and flawless gear shifts, the 1M keeps up until speeds reach around 100 mph (160 km/h) which is where the extra grunt of the X5 M kicks in and pushes it forward. On a track though, things would be interesting, to say the least.
