BMW F80 M3 Gets Recaro Seats

One of the things most reviewers agreed upon when testing the F80 M3 were the seats. The new ‘people huggers’ developed by the Motorsport division were praised as being both comfortable and supportive at the same time by most drivers. Add in those new shiny M logos and you seeming have a winner.

The problem is, they could be characterized as ‘heavy’ by some. For a car that has a CFRP prop shaft and roof just to save as much weight as possible that could be an issue.

The guys from iND Distribution might be the first ones in the world to actually take those comfy M3 seats out and install some racing ones. They went for some Recaro units that are a lot lighter but also less comfortable.

To justify their actions, the guys even posted a couple of photos of the two sets on the scale. The standard seats (and this includes the airbags) weighed in at 24.4 lbs (11 kg) each while the Recaro seats showed a weight of just 8 lbs (3.62 kg) each, more than 60% lighter.

Overall, that was a 32.8 lbs (14.8 kg) weight reduction that may or may not make a difference. It depends on plenty more factors. Now, what would you do? Are you one of those guys that simply takes a look at a spec sheet and knows if he wants to drive a car or are you interested in other things as well? Let us know!
