The BMW 1 Series range will get a new model in a couple of months and it’s one we’ve seen out testing a couple of times already. We’re talking about the 1 Series Sedan, the next logical step in the way Bavarians do business and respond to their rivals.
At the moment, BMW’s product range doesn’t include a small front-wheel drive sedan to rival the likes of the Audi A3 Sedan and the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class but that’s about to change.
As you may very well know, the 1 Series will move to the UKL platform in the future. That means it will turn front-wheel drive and use only B-family engines, but it also means it will be sharing its underpinnings with the likes of the MINI family, the 2 Series Active Tourer and X1.
How many of those underpinnings will be shared? Well, a lot if we’re to consider the latest spyshots coming in from China. That’s where the upcoming 1 Series Sedan was spied, with its interior on display. What we noticed is that things look exactly the same as in the 2 Series Active Tourer.
We can’t say we were surprised, especially after looking at how the 2 Series Active Tourer and the new X1 resemble each other inside. We had a gut feeling that the Germans would keep things simple and recycle the interior design on all models using front-wheel drive layouts.
Even so, it’s not a bad place to sit in, far from it. It looks clean, simple and easy to use and at the moment, perfect for the Chinese market. Why the Chinese? Because sources claim that the 1 Series Sedan will only be sold there initially, leaving the European and North American markets unscathed.
Either way, under its bonnet we’ll find 1.5-liter 3-cylinder and 2-liter 4-cylinder plants with outputs possibly as high as 231 HP on both petrol and diesel fuel. At the same time, prices should be slightly higher than for the 1 Series Hatch but not by much.
