Most automotive journalists were invited this week in Portugal to partake in the launching of BMW’s new M Performance Parts for the 4 Series Coupe. With this occasion, some got even to test drive the new car around the Estoril track and curvy roads of Portugal’s mountains.

One of them was Chris Harris, one of the most respected voices in the field. Of course, after he was done with the car he started writing a review that will soon be followed by a video too. Here’s what he had to say.

The car he drove was the 435i. As usual, it came with the 306 HP N55 engine under the bonnet that produces 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque and the ZF 8-speed gearbox. About these two there’s little left to say. They are perfect for each other and will keep on proving their worth on this model too.

As we’ve seen in Edmund’s review, Chris also praises the chassis and the dynamics of the car. Compared to the previous 3 Series Coupe, this 4er will bring more fun to the game. It’s only natural since the engineers were really preoccupied with getting everything right and the 4er is 10 mm lower and has the lowest center of gravity of its segment (according to BMW).

You even sit 9mm lower than in a 3 Series Coupe and, even if it doesn’t seem like much, it makes a whole lot of a difference. Rear seats are comfortable enough but might be tricky in case the driver has very long legs. The boot compartment is spacious enough and will keep you luggage safe and sound (plenty of them too).

On the circuit, the 435i really comes alive. It feels good and at home and you can finally use that engine and transmission the way they are meant too. Even though the BMW officials told them not to drift the car, most of the reviewers still had plenty of fun in it and that says a lot.
