BMW’s current range doesn’t allow you to get a digital instrument cluster unless you’re willing to get a car that’s at least a 5 Series. That will all change with the upcoming models but since the 3 Series won’t come out until 2018, what is this sorcery we stumbled upon?
The Bimmerpost forums are now starting to get filled with photos of a 3 Series wearing such a cluster and it was all a custom fit. Don’t worry, the facelifted 3er won’t get this feature either, it’s all just the ambitious work of some Russians and what looks like some Vietnamese enthusiasts.
There’s a reason why BMW is only offering this option on higher-tier models. Apart from the obvious lack of space inside a 3 Series, there’s also the tech factor. More expensive models need to have some means of justifying their price tags and since almost all interiors from the BMW range today look the same, this is one of the ways in which you can set apart a 5er and a 3er.
From our own experience with Bimmers, their digital instruments are really worth the upgrade. They have one of the best resolutions on the market and look really good, with plenty of added functions compared to the stock ones.
However, if you’re more of a classic type of guy, the old needles will do the job just fine and you can focus on spending your money on some other optional feature.
Speaking of money, the part alone costs around $2,000 not to mention the work and changes you’d have to do on your car to get it to work. Is it worth it? Well, it’s all up to each individual but if you ask me, it’s not, no matter how good it looks.
