Thanks to the online configurator available on BMW South Africa's website, we now know the exact numbers the brand new 220i and 220d models will have, even before they were officially announced.
Just as expected, few changes will happen on the new F22 platform but thanks to some new technologies and innovative materials being used (mainly Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer) the weight is being kept in check on the new cars.

The 220i will have the same N20 2-liter 4-cylinder engine under the bonnet, with 184 HP and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque and is said to have a combined fuel efficiency of 6.1 l/100 km (38.5 mpg) for the manual gearbox and 5.7 l/100 km (41.2 mpg) for the automatic.

On the diesel alternative though, the 220d will get the same N47 unit with 184 HP and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque but will return 56 mpg (4.2 l/100 km) with an automatic gearbox and 52.5 mpg (4.5 l/100km) for the manual.

As for the performance, the 220i will do 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7 seconds whilst the diesel will be 0.2 seconds slower with the manual and 0.1 seconds slower with the auto.
