Over 20 years ago, the guys from Auto Motor und Sport were comparing the Ferrari 348 and the Porsche 911 Carrera (964 Series). The Ferrari had 300 HP coming out of a V8 engine while the Porsche pushed out 250 HP using of a boxer unit.
Those two were considered proper sportscars for their times and had the numbers to show it off. Their price tags were just as stunning as their performances and no everyone could afford them.

Fast forwarding to 2013, the same publication is testing some other 300 HP cars with a smaller price tag and destined for a completely different audience: the BMW M135i xDrive and the Audi S3.

Both of these cars come with all-wheel-drive systems and both have automatic gearboxes. However, the BMW has 20 extra HP, 2 cylinders and 2 gears more than its rival.

Over any track, the Bimmer will definitely be faster and more agile, even in the all-wheel-drive version. The 8-speed gearbox pulls away beautiful from the 6-speed auto of the Audi and the 2 extra cylinder provide more torque.

The  Audi is slightly more economical, registering a 9.6 l/100 km (24 mpg) while BMW took 10.8 l/100km (21.7 mpg). Furthermore, the S3 offers more space inside, is lighter by 134 kg (295 lb) and has a lower price.

Even though the S3 is the better overall car, the M135i is the better sports car that will put a smile on your face every time you drive it.
