Another drag race caught my attention today, after witnessing an F13 M6 in action, putting 680 HP to work. This time, it’s a stock F10 M5 that’s doing all the racing, against a less powerful Porsche.
The 4.4-liter turbocharged Bimmer goes against a naturally aspirated Carrera S (991) with less power and less torque, by a considerable margin.

The Porsche has 400 HP and 441 Nm of torque coming from a 3.8-liter engine, mated to a 7-speed automatic PDK gearbox. On the other hand, the Bavarian has 560 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque at its disposal, through a 7-speed DCT gearbox.

The main difference here is made by the power to weight ratio, since the Carrera is lighter by a considerable margin, tipping the scale at 1,415 kg (3,120 lbs). The BMW, on the other hand, weighs no less than 1,945 kg (4,287 lbs).

Even so, with the ratios at 3.53 kg/HP for the Porsche and 3.47 kg/HP for the M5, the Sedan manages to pull away, quite easily, displaying impressive strength all the way through, showing the Swabian how it’s done.
