China is currently the largest automotive market in the world, surpassing the US this year. However, each manufacturer has its preferences and some markets are more successful than others, depending on the public's preferences.
For BMW, the biggest market used to be the USA but things are bound to change, thanks to the newfound wealth of the Chinese people. During the first half of the year, China overpassed the US in sales and BMW expects the trend to continue towards the end of the year.

“Strong growth in future will come from the smaller cities, and the strong growth will also come especially from the western region. There are 100 cities with more than a million inhabitants in China with no premium car dealers at all, so this shows the huge potential we’re having in this country," said Karsten Engel, head of BMW China.

Taking a look at the numbers for the first six months of the year, you'll notice that the analysts are correct: BMW sold 182,800 units in China so far and 172,787 in the US. However, there's still 6 more months to go and we'll have to wait and see how things turn out over the whole year, to proclaim right or wrong on the projections.
