BMW Engine Bolt Recall Expanded to 156,137 More Vehicles

Last week we were telling you that BMW decided to recall 232,098 cars in China due to an engine bolt issue related to the VANOS system. Apparently, the same issue was found on the North American continent, the company deciding to expand its recall over there too.

Therefore, 156,137 BMWs will be called back into service stations as soon as possible to fix the troubling issue. The cars affected are 2010 to 2012 models from the 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, X3, X5, X6 and Z4 Series range.

The camshaft timing issue could reduce engine power and cause further damage if it’s not repaired, according to BMW: “The unit rotates the intake or exhaust camshaft in order to alter the timing of the lift of the respective intake or exhaust valves,” a spokesman said.

However, in very rare cases, the bolts holding the camshaft timing unit housing may become loose or, in extreme cases, break, in which case the ‘check engine’ light would pop up warning you of the dangers of continuing to drive your car in this state.

If you do, however, decide to ignore this warning light, issues could become progressively worse leading to no start conditions, stalling or even engine damage. Since the recall will be free of charge, you should visit your local dealership as soon as it starts rolling out.
