It's history repeating itself with BMW and the annual “Motorcycle of the Year 2016” awards from the top-notch German bike magazine Motorrad. BMW takes home titles for no less than five categories, complemented by another six podium places.
Victory belonged to the Bavarian motorcycles in the “Sports Bikes,” “Touring/Sport Touring Bikes,” “Enduros/Supermotos,” “Crossovers,” and “Modern Classics” categories for the 18th annual MOTORRAD magazine “Motorcycle of the Year 2016” readers' vote.

The S1000RR is steadily establishing itself as one of the benchmarks in the superbike category, winning the award for the second time in a row. No less than 23.4 percent of the respondents voted for the German liter-class sport bike, a score almost identical to that of last year.

In the “Crossover” category, it was nice to see the BMW S1000XR, with 26.7% of the votes. The Ducati Multistrada could have also been in its stead as one of the bikes that actually created the Sport Adventure class, but you know the drill, Germans voting for a German bike...

The R1200RS consolidated its advantage over the classic R1200RT, and won the “Touring/Sports Touring Bike” title, just like last year. This fact is quite significant, as it shows that the preferences of German customers as far as sport-touring machines go are shifting towards the sportier side.

More than 30 percent of the votes went to the BMW R nineT and R nineT Scrambler in the “Modern Classics” category. Again, with Triumph's new classic machines introduced last autumn at EICMA, we can expect to see modifications in the next round of the Motorrad awards, especially as Hinckley updated their engines and took them into the 1200cc zone as well.

The R1200GS is the best bike in the “Enduros/Supermotos” category for the eighth year in a row

As for the fifth title, it arrives unsurprisingly in the “Enduros/Supermotos” category. For the eighth year in a row, the R1200GS attracted the most votes in this category, with 23.4% of the respondents choosing this bike as their favorite.

The “Naked Bikes” category saw two BMW machines in the second and third positions, the R1200R and S1000R, respectively. The C650 Sport/C650GT also scored a second place in the “Scooter” category.

The Motorrad “Motorcycle of the Year” is considered the most important bike and scooter readers' choice event in Europe. 52,178 readers voted this year, with more than three quarters of a million votes being cast since 1999 when it all started.
