BMW E90 M3 vs BMW E92 M3: a Weird Showdown

 Amongst the thousands of videos that are circling online these days showing various drag races with BMWs, we found a rather peculiar one.

  It's a BMW on BMW showdown but just any kind, these cars are basically the same, excepting the body style. Both of them are M3s, both are fitted with ESS's VT-625 and DKG transmissions. The only difference between them is that one is a Coupe (E92) and one is a Sedan (E90).   Under the bonnet of the stock models lies the same engine, a 4-liter V8 that revs as high as 8,250 RPM. Making 420 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque in standard guise, this thing is rather quick. With the ESS VT-625 kit on though, things get a whole new dimension. The kit is made up of
  • Vortech V3Si supercharger unit.
  • Vortech Maxflow Race bypass assembly.
  • Uni-belt drive system with additional OEM rollers.
  • 8 High Capacity Bosch Motorsport fuel injectors (Spec 3).
  • Optimized, dyno tweaked MSS60 ECU software with removed top speed governor, calibrated for spec 3 injectors.
  • CNC hard anodized brackets and hardware.
  • K&N high flow air filter.
  • High temperature casted plastic intake system for SC
  • High capacity liquid intercooler system (VT2 only).
  • Cast aluminium ESS intake manifold with integrated lightweight velocity stacks optimized for boost.
  • High temperature silicone hoses with clamps
  • Heavy-Duty drive belt.
  • ESS oil breather assembly designed for boost.
  • ESS E-Flash reprogramming and diagnostic interface.
Normally, this setup would give you about 625 HP at the crank with some nice 405 lb-ft (549 Nm) of torque to go with it in terms of twist. That's at 6.5-7 PSI. Better figures can be obtained, easily.

All things considered, the end result of the race should be decided simply by the weight factor. As standard, the sedan's kerbweight adds up to 1,690 kg (3,726 lb) whilst the coupe is slightly lighter, tipping the scale at 1,680 kg (3,726 lb).    That's a 10 kg (22 lbs) difference.
