The BMW E89 Z4 received a new entry level model in Europe alongside the Life Cycle Impulse this year. The cheapest Z4 at the moment is the sDrive18i, unfortunately not available in the US.
The guys from Autocar wanted to see what you get for a car that costs £27,615 ($42,370) in the UK. For starters, you'll get the N20 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that is also found on the sDrive20i and the sDrive28i models, in different power outputs.

As expected, the entry-level model has less power than the 184 HP of the sDrive20i and 245 HP of the sDrive28i, reaching a modest 156 HP and 240 Nm (177 lb-ft) of torque. You can also pick you transmission between a manual 6-speed unit and an automatic 8-speed ZF one.

The car Autocar got for the test was fitted with the manual gearbox that allows you to go from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 7.9 seconds, a bit slow but then you should bear in mind that this is the model with the least amount of power out of the line-up.

If you're not going to the track and just want to enjoy sunny days cruising down sandy beaches or around town, this car will do. It's using the same great roadster chassis as all other Z4s and everything else is there, depending on how much you want to spend on optional features.

The styling is impressive and it will draw a lot of attention. Furthermore, the roof comes down quickly and gets back up at the press of a button, covering you from all Mother Nature's tempests in no time.

Returning the same numbers as the sDrive20i and sDrive28i, 34.6 mpg (6.8 l/100km) this is a practical choice, cheaper to maintain and just as satisfying from a roadster's point of view.
