BMW E61 M5 Touring Drag Racing a Cadillac CTS-V Wagon Has Unexpected Outcome

According to the uploader of the video below, the cars we’re about to watch going at it on a drag strip are completely stock. Well, that might sound fair in theory but in real life it makes the outcome of the race seem ... peculiar.

That’s because there are a couple of differences between the two cars that, in a straight line, should’ve offered us a different result. Let’s take a closer look.

The only M Touring car launched by BMW in this century was the E61 M5 Touring. That car was legendary mostly because if was fitted with a 5-liter V10 engine that makes a monstrous ruckus. But being loud was only part of the equation.

Together with that huge gas guzzler came 507 HP and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft) of torque, one of the fastest transmissions of its time and unbelievable performance both on and off the track. Its rival here today would trample all over these figures.

That’s the Cadillac CTS-V Wagon and it used a 6.2-liter V8 engine with a supercharger. That means it has 564 HP and 747 Nm (551 lb-ft) of torque at its disposal. Using a 6-speed automatic gearbox, the 2-ton monster would do 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4 seconds flat back in the day.

Admittedly, there are other things at play during drag races and the truth of the matter is, better engineering can win you such endeavors on the long run. However, we can’t help but wonder if this M5 is truly stock. What do you think?
