Modern cars might seem perfectly engineered from certain points of view, but the truth is that many of them still have faults that can cause serious issues, some of which could’ve been easily avoided.
We’ll zoom in on BMW for now, on the E60 generation 5-Series (this is the previous one) to be more precise, as this has an issue that has been exposed by multiple owners. The problem is the location of the Micro Power Module, which controls the entertainment, communication, as well as the navigation features of the car.
The Micro Power Module was placed under the spare tire, being attached to a piece of styrofoam. The fact that it doesn’t have any special isolation makes the electronic component vulnerable to any liquid that spills in the trunk.
This can lead to multiple consequences, which start from the iDrive audio and navigation not working, through shorts that can cause other electronic components to melt down and even a fire. Forum users claim that, in certain cases, neither the warranty not the insurance cover the repairs, as the user is blamed for the situation.
The adjacent image gallery shows you the exact location of the Micro Power Module, but all you can do for now is buy a trunk tray and be careful with liquids in your trunk.
