People have been complaining lately that the new M cars are far too subtle in character and not on par with what the competition offers. That’s especially true when it comes to the sound they make apparently.
While we were out testing the new M4 we couldn’t say we agreed. The car sounds just as it should in every gear without going overboard. What some people don’t realize is that an extremely loud exhaust can get quite tiresome over time.

We have a hunch that the guys from Vehicle Virgins didn’t know that when they went ahead and removed the muffler off their E39 M5. The thing is; the S62 engine on the M5 is already a refined beast that sounds better than most cars on the road today.

It’s a peculiar motor for BMW as they are now trying to adhere to a new way of making engines these days. According to the engineers, the perfect size for a cylinder is 500cc for fuel consumption and CO2 emissions but also from an acoustic point of view.

Since the S62 is a 4.9-liter V8, that ratio is long gone. But even so, the sound it makes is incredible with or without the muffler. Now, since Vehicle Virgins went through the trouble of removing that ‘pesky’ muffler, we have to give them props not only because it’s the right thing to do but also because we love how the car sounds now.

According to them, the audio in the footage below was recorded using an exterior camera so it isn’t what you’d hear inside the car but even so, it’s incredibly good. As a matter of fact, it’s pretty darn close to the 6.2-liter V8s used in AMG models not too long ago, plants that basically made history. Check it out and let us know what you think about it.
