If that happened to you and you'd like to replace it without going to a dealership here's a DIY for the E36 3 Series BMW.

The estimated time needed to complete this DIY is around an hour and no, you don't have to take out the steering wheel or the dash in order to change a light.

First of all, as always, get everything you need at hand. That means: W3W light bulbs (as many as you want to replace), a Philips screw driver and a flat head screw driver.

Step 1: Take out the screws on top of the cluster, marked in photo no 1.

Step 2: Push the bottom in and pry the top of the cluster loose using a flat head screwdriver (or something thinner in case that doesn't fit). Be careful with the screw holders, guide them out safely.

Step 3: Pull out the cluster towards you. (Photo no 2)

Step 4: Slip your hand behind the cluster and you will notice there are 3 wiring harnesses holding it(Photos number 3 and 4 . You will need to undo them. They are being held in by a tiny strap. You have to pry the strap out and push it up with the flathead screwdriver (Photos no 5, 6 and 7) and then just undo them

Step 5: After releasing the wire harnesses you just have to wiggle the cluster out from behind the steering wheel and turn it around.
Step 6: You will have to replace one or all of the light bulbs market on photo no 8, depending on your needs. In order to do that just twist the green holders to remove them.

Step 7: Stick the cluster back behind the wheel and make sure it doesn't wiggle to avoid annoying noises later on.

Step 8: Reconnect the wire harnesses and push the cluster back into place

Step 9: Fix the cluster with the 2 Philips bolts and you're done!

Enjoy!
