Comparing a 25 year old sports car with its modern day competitors might not seem like a good idea. That's not the case with one legendary vehicle BMW created: the E30 M3.
Even though more than a quarter of a century passed since the E30 M3 was introduced, the most successful touring car from Bavaria is still a benchmark for affordable everyday sports cars, just like the guys from MotorTrend admit.

They wanted to compare the Scion FR-S with Volkswagen's GTI and needed a benchmark to do so. They couldn't've picked better. The 'granny', with its 192 HP and 210 Nm (155 lb-ft) of torque proved, once again, that it's still the best out of the 3.

The Scion FR-S has a 2-liter boxer engine with 200 HP and 200 Nm (155 lb-ft) of torque and reaches 62 mph (100km/h) in 7.6 seconds. However, this car placed 3rd in the comparison.

The Golf GTI has a 2-liter, 4-cylinder TSI engine with 200 HP and 281 Nm (207 lb-ft) of torque, reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.2 seconds when fitted with the DSG gearbox and place 2nd, after the iconic M3.
