Looking around on the internet, you'll find all sort of things, but when it comes to rare BMWs, it doesn't get much rarer than this: a Sport Wagon BMW E3 (New Six Sedan at its origins).
That's because BMW never built such a model. The New Six E3 model was a Sedan and was sold in the UK in the 70s. However, given the massive popularity of Estate (sport wagons) cars in the European country, one dealership thought about doing one or… ten.
So they did. To create this car they used an Austin Maxi to supply the extended roof and a top-hinged tailgate. The bodywork wasn't exceptional, and even for those days could only be called mediocre but building only 10 such cars, the exclusivity of owning one, attracted customers.
The car retained its 3-liter M30 engine with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection used to develop 200 HP and 200 lb-ft (271 Nm) of torque and that was a lot for those times. Reaching 62 mph (100 km/h) in 8.5 seconds is a time some modern cars don't manage to achieve even to this day.
The wagon was brought to Chicago by its current owner, Davi Maughan, to be redone and make it look more like a true BMW. That's where Bimmer-Mag caught up with him and did an interview.
