BMW’s eight DTM cars will be wearing black ribbons on the Nurburgring this weekend, as an homage to Dieter Lamm, the twin brother of BMW Team Schnitzer’s principal, Charly Lamm. Dieter was basically part of the team and was there when the guys recorded the best or the worst results of their careers.
“For us, the race at the Nürburgring will be overshadowed by the death of Dieter Lamm, who was a member of the BMW Motorsport family. It will be extremely difficult for us to focus solely on the sporting side of things. I would like to take this opportunity to say this on behalf of everyone involved,” said Jens Marquardt, BMW Motorsport Director.
The seventh race of the 2014 DTM Season will see the teams compete in the famous track located in the Eifel Mountains, the one circuit in the world that is closest to the BMW brand than any other.
It’s not just that the Bavarians enjoyed countless wins on the Green Hell but they are also using this track to test their newest models, both from the Motorsport division and the ‘regular’ range.
Winning no less than 9 times in the DTM on the ‘Ring, the teams are more than happy to race there, every time they get the chance. Last year two drivers set out from the front row in the race, Augusto Farfus and Marco Wittmann but by the end only Farfus managed to earn a spot on the podium.
However, back in 2012, when BMW returned to the DTM, they celebrated their latest win on the Green Hell, with Bruno Spengler behind the wheel of the M3 Coupe DTM. The same driver will be celebrating his 100th race this weekend.
Having won four of the six races of this season so far, the BMW teams are coming in pretty confident, especially after claiming the top four spots in the Spielberg race. Of course, that kind of a success means they will have to carry some extra weight in their cars, according to the new DTM rules.
“We would obviously like to defend our leads in the Eifel Mountains, but the performance weight our teams must carry on board the cars will play a key role and will definitely make our life much more difficult. Despite this, the layout of the Nürburgring ought really to suit our BMW M4 DTM,” said Jens.
At the moment, Marco Wittmann is leading the Driver’s Championship with 95 points followed by Mattias Ekstrom from Audi that is 39 points behind him. On the Manufacturers’ Competition, BMW is currently first with 267 points to its name followed by Audi with 251.
