If you thought that the upcoming M2 will be awesome, wait till you learn what the chief of design over at BMW had to say in a recent interview. According to Autocar, one upcoming car from the Bavarians will take styling cues from the legendary E30 M3. Now, how cool is that?
The E30 M3 has long been regarded as the epitome of handling and an eternal classic not only by fans of the brand but others as well. Even though it was built back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the original M3 is still as desirable as ever, possibly even more popular these days when we can only drive turbocharged Bimmers for a change.
Leaving aside the performance of the atmospheric engine it had under the bonnet and the incredible setup of the chassis, the E30 M3 still looks good. Those wide fenders and the sleek lines across the body make it one of the most attractive cars the Germans ever penned.
Now, Adrian van Hooydonk, the BMW Board Member for Design said to Autocar that “the E30 M3 has a really big fan base, and [they] are going to be taking cues from it for a future product.” Since the F87 M2 is the first M car that will be launched (scheduled for a premiere at Frankfurt) it’s only natural to assume that will be it, right?
Furthermore, it builds up on the brand’s reputation of creating hardcore small, light coupes that are a handful to control. Yes, this sounds really good.
On the other hand, if the stock model won’t be the one to sport such details, there’s an alternative scenario that could happen. This one sounds even better.
We told you a while back that the M2 won’t be getting all the latest technologies from BMW so that it doesn’t step on the toes of the M3 and M4. Since this is a smaller car to begin with, it will be lighter when the same materials are being used to make it.
Therefore, we reckon that the CFRP roof will be left out as well as other lighter tidbits. This would bring the total weight up to over 1,500 kg (3,300 lbs). Even so, the second scenario we were telling you about includes a special, CSL version of the M2.
That would be a limited-run model that would employ all the carbon fiber we want. In this case, the weight would tip towards the 1,400 kg (3,100 lbs) and that, combined with 370 HP and rear-wheel drive would be equal to a lot of fun!
Furthermore, since BMW is celebrating 100 years in 2016, it could be the perfect gift for fans of the brand in the absence of a supercar.
