Done by David Obendorfer, the BMW CS Vintage Concept is meant to be a modern take on the classic BMW E9 models, from the 2000C and 2000CS models to the 3.0CSL, a couple of the most interesting and appealing cars ever to come out of Bavaria.
According to its designer, the whole idea was focused around the design created by Giovanni Michelotti back in the 60s and started from the 6 Series platform.

“Back then the 2000 CS used to be fairly successful thanks to its sleek line, brilliant performance and good build quality,” said Obendorfer.

“BMW decided to upgrade the model by setting up a new generation of straight-six engines, redesigning the interior, and the only part of the coupè that had raised concerns: the front. The new front end, by Giovanni Michelotti, gave considerable impetus to the whole car body. The designer from Turin eliminated the large rectangular headlights in favor of an arrow-shaped front with a large matte black mask and four round headlights,’ he added.

However, his take on the matter brings the CS into the 21st century, showcasing the already trademark corona rings of recent BMWs, air gills on the front fenders, and even a familiar wheel design, inspired by the 1M Coupe.

Inside, the combination of retro and new elements gave birth to an unique hybrid. The word to keep in mind here is ‘minimal’. Everything was done putting functionality above anything else, keeping the details to a minimum. We can spot an old school instrument cluster with a generous iDrive screen alongside a simple audio system, the iDrive controller and an unusual gearstick.

While it might seem ludicrous to some people, such design exercises are quite helpful in showing us how things could’ve been if the design was pushed in a different direction. We also get to see a fresh alternative to the already usual BMW design that might be boring some people, especially inside. What do you think about it? Yay or Nay?
