A while back BMW and Toyota signed an agreement to share technology and knowledge in order to bring forth a different kind of sports car, one that would combine the strengths of both companies.
Most people saw that as a drawback for BMW and purists claimed that it will be diluting the BMW DNA over time. However, in a recent discussion with Drive, BMW officials shed some light into the subject.
According to them, despite previous speculation, the joint development will spawn two totally different cars. Furthermore, in order to get approved by the Board of Directors over at BMW, the concept that would be proposed to go into production would have to be 100% BMW.
Out of the thousands of possible configurations for a sports car the Bavarian company will most likely take into consideration just "four, five, six" propositions that might be thoroughly discussed.
As for how this new car might look like and what it will be using as a drivetrain, the officials weren't sure yet: “It could be a mid-engined supercar or a traditional front-engined sports car. We don’t know yet.”
In case they would go for a mid-engined car, this would be a proper descendant of the M1, a car that was legend in its respective age and continues to make us day dream. The whole BMW community is still waiting for a successor.
Since BMW will soon celebrate 100 years of automotive excellence, the timing couldn't be better to release a proper supercar that everyone's been waiting for. Who knows, maybe this will be it.
