BMW Confirms M Performance Automobiles Aim at Audi’s S Models

In the wake of the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, the first major event of the year in the auto industry, BMW felt the need to clarify some things for the North American continent, where the M Performance Automobiles (MPA) will be making their debut this month.

Therefore, the German company released a product planning bulletin in which it talks about the new 2 Series and its MPA model, the M235i. The big news here is the explanation it gives to the whole new range of products manufactured under the ‘M Performance’ moniker.

According to the official statement: “In 2012, BMW launched a completely new category of vehicle to slot between the base Series products and BMW M, which competes more aggressively with the popular Audi “S” models”. In translation, the M Performance automobiles were created to take away some of the market share of Audi’s S variants.

The release goes on to list the ‘7 key components’ that differentiate an MPA from the standard model:

1. Refined sports suspension, re-engineered through the expertise of BMW M
2. Signature wheel design
3. Improved steering
4. Emotional exhaust note
5. Differentiated exterior/interior details (Editor’s note: like a lot of M badges all around)
6. Improved components
7. Power improvements

While I did find the above mentioned list quite funny, it does have some truth to it, as ridiculous as it would seem. Audi currently does the same tricks to sell more cars while Mercedes-Benz is apparently not interested in such niches, instead they are pushing forward with their Black Series models, positioned above regular AMG variants.
