BMW Confirms 3 DTM Teams for 2012

When it will return to the DTM in 2012, German carmaker BMW will run a 6-car programme via three teams. The announcement was made by the soon to be replaced motorsport director of the German marque, Dr. Mario Theissen, who confirmed that six M3s will join the current Mercedes and Audi challengers on the 2012 grid.

Schnitzer and RBM, long-time partners of BMW in touring cars and FIA GT competitions, will field two cars each next season, while Reinhold Motorsport has also committed to running another 2 M3s in 2012.

In recent months we have been working very intensely on the DTM project,” said Theissen, who will be replaced by Jens Marquardt as head of BMW's motorsport operations this summer, in a press release.

The project has picked up pace, and in naming the teams, we have taken the next step. As well as developing the car, it is now a matter of assigning tasks and establishing structures and processes. The co-operation between BMW Motorsport and the teams, as well as that between the team bases and the race track, must be well established.”

This is an excellent line-up for BMW. We are looking forward to co-operating over the coming years and hope to enjoy great success together,” he added.

We were pleased with the high level of interest and numerous applications received from a number of professional teams. The concepts presented by RBM, Schnitzer and Reinhold Motorsport ultimately convinced us.”

While RBM and Schnitzer have been partners of BMW for some time, newly-formed Reinhold Motorsport have apparently been eyeing an association with the German car maker ever since it announced its return to the series last year.

Since April last year we have always wanted to be a part of this project, and we are very proud to have been given the nod,” said team boss Stefan Reinhold.

Neither of the 3 teams have yet made any announcements regarding their drivers lineups for the 2012 campaign. More news on that will likely surface towards the end of the 2011 competition year.
